For those of you who don’t know, before I got into Tech, I was a hair braider. I started braiding hair when I was 10 years old, and I began doing it for other people when I turned 12.
Since then, I have gained clients through Craigslist, word of mouth, and my Tumblr blog. In my teenage years, I would travel on the Pace bus to meet with different clients. I learned a lot about getting leads and clients back then, out of my desperation to make money for new jeans from Rainbow, and to get weave for my OWN hair. Nowadays, many people want to learn how to braid hair on their own (due to the cost of getting it done by a professional) and also teach their children how to take care of their own hair. There’s an opportunity for a hairstylist who can braid hair but can’t take on the clients who can’t afford it. So, if I were a hair braider in 2024, I would definitely launch a class to teach other people how to braid their hair. Because there’s definitely a market for it.
Even though many aspects of hair braiding need to be more hands-on, a lot of the foundational things CAN be taught online:
- What supplies you need
- Preparing the hair before braiding it
- Aftercare
- etc.
One thing that I would do to cover the hands-on aspect is to create prerequisites for my students. They need to have access to a device with a camera, something they can practice on (a human or a doll/mannequin head), and supplies like a comb, rubber bands, duck clips, or hair clips. I will include this information on my course homepage or sales page on Teachable.
Then, I would split up my course into different sections covering the basics of different hair types, different hairstyles, things I should know about a person’s hair before I start braiding, etc.
Also, using Teachable’s platform, I would record videos of myself doing different styles so that my students can see the techniques I use when braiding hair. For each lesson and section, I will upload videos and photos of the different techniques I’m sharing.
I would also schedule live sessions so my students can ask me questions and learn different things in real time.
Even if I did have an in-person class, I would love to have a lot of my materials stored online in a curated fashion so my students can access them after my live sessions.
Teachable offers an option for me to have all of my materials, lessons, tips, tricks, and tutorials all organized in one central location for easy access for my students.
